About

Forrester started his legal career with Kensington Swan in the IP/IT team before changing tack and cities completely and moving to sunny Nelson to work for a boutique firm specialising solely in maritime law.  After a year down south Forrester moved back to Auckland and for the next four years operated remotely from a home office dealing with all things sea and ship related.  Wishing to expand his commercial knowledge Forrester joined Turner Hopkins in Takapuna and fast forward two years later commenced operations with McVeagh Fleming in September 2017.

In addition to having a broad commercial/corporate law background, Forrester's primary area of speciality is maritime law, particularly the commercial aspects of sale and purchase, corporate structuring, new builds/refits, flagging and chartering arrangements.

Cognisant of the fact that business doesn't stop moving (most of the time!) Forrester understands and appreciates the need for effective, timely and pragmatic advice often under serious time constraints.

His belief that 'less is sometimes more' aligns with his desire to facilitate rather than hinder transactions which is greatly appreciated by his clients who have said that it 'provides them with great comfort knowing that he is a call or email away' and that his knowledge of what is a complex practice area combined with a cool head has proved invaluable in getting deals across the line in trying times.

Examples of transactions

Sale and purchase of a Whiting 45 Sloop freshly arrived in New Zealand from over a decade of blue water cruising. Although sad to see her go, the vendor was extremely motivated to get the transaction across the line with the least amount of fuss and both parties were an absolute pleasure to work with. Feedback received by Tony Coupe from the purchasers of this Sloop follows:

"Hi Tony,

Just a quick note to say that Forrester has proven to be an absolute godsend to us with the purchase of our sailboat.

He knows his stuff; he has been extremely efficient and quick with responses and has taken the stress out of a big purchase amount (for us) and also the vendors and ourselves have been darn impressed.

I would recommend him to anyone needing to have expertise in marine law. He knows all of the pitfalls and has been available to ensure that everything that can be checked has been checked. He also has a list of excellent marine surveyors that he can recommend, and at this time of year, one of his surveyor contacts came in very handy.

So, thank you for recommending him. If you or he need a verbal reference at any-time, please let Avis or I know."

Outside Interests

Outside of work Forrester loves to surf, mountain bike and dive when his two young daughters permit. He is a keen supporter of the All Blacks (when they aren't playing his beloved Springboks!) and religiously follows the UFC, NFL and the World Surf League. Forrester's dream is to retire to the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii and spend his days surfing and drinking mai tai's with his wife.
